My Story

I grew up in India; my mother who was a homemaker spent a lot of time in the kitchen making home cooked meals. Her nutrition ideas were very simple, she wanted to feed us a variety of food. She cooked for us all the different vegetables and legumes available in the local market within 15 days and repeated the cycle again and again. My parents bought fresh fruits every 2-3 days so we have a variety to eat from. They bought local and seasonal fresh produce.  My mom was very particular about raising us vegetarian. As a vegetarian in India, we did consume some dairy everyday.

I have 3 siblings; my mom taught all of us to cook food at a very young age. She made sure that we know this is a very important skill to have for good health. In fact when I was 12 years old, I could make a meal from planning to actually cooking the same. She gave me the love for cooking and enjoying home cooked meals. She inspired me to eat healthy. When we were in school, she packed homemade lunch for us every day. Junk food was not so prevalent in India at that time, though traditionally most of our homemade snacks were deep-fried and popular sweets were loaded with dairy and sugar. Even though most of the population were vegetarian, type-2 diabetes was very common.

In May, 2010, back in India my parents were experiencing a variety of health problems including type 2 diabetes. My sister wanted to help them, so she enrolled herself and our parents in a 21-day diabetes reversal program using only Plant-Based Foods. After completing the program, my parents were able to control their blood sugar levels and no longer needed medication. They were thrilled to be able to enjoy the sweetness of fruits once forbidden on their diabetic diets. My sister lost 15 pounds. The good news was enough for me to start heading back to my traditional vegetarian roots.

I enrolled in PCRM’s 21-Day Vegan Kickstart program, and it was life changing for me. My migraine headaches that had plagued me for years virtually disappeared, and I started to lose the baby weight that I never seemed to be able to lose. My energy levels increased dramatically! Shortly after, I jumped at the chance to become a PCRM Food For Life instructor, and I could not be happier with this opportunity to spread the word about what I have learned. As a Food for Life instructor, I want to reach people and do my best to help them learn the benefits of adopting a completely vegan lifestyle because I’ve seen its lifesaving effects in my own family. Just like my mother taught me, my hope is for everyone to eat healthy and work consciously to change their lifestyle, and to fit in 30 to 60 minutes of cooking fresh and delicious meals at home.
